Rob John

Rob's professional career started with the Melbourne Symphony in 1977, when he was 19 years of age. He was the leader of that orchestra from 1986-87 and after a period of time in the UK, from 1987-1989, was offered the leadership of the State Orchestra of Victoria/ Artist-in-Residence at the Victorian Arts Centre in Melbourne. He has also guest lead a large number of orchestras, including the Western Australian, Tasmanian, Queensland, Adelaide Symphony Orchestras, The Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra, plus the Nagoya Philharmonic Orchestra in Japan.

Recordings as a soloist and leader include Madame Butterfly ( ABC Records ), Romance with the Violin        ( VAC Records ), Elton John Live in Australia ( MCARecords), Capricorn Rising ( IMP ) and Uilleann Sunrise    ( ABC records ).

Tour leaderships have included The Boy form Oz ( Hugh Jackman 2006 ), Elton John, Kiri te Kanawa, Placido Domingo and Natalie Cole, and he has lead orchestras for musical productions such as Wicked, Chicago, The Producers, The Lion King, Les Miserables and The Sound of Music.

As a conductor Rob has worked as a musical director in symphony concerts, with popular artists, for film score recording and with orchestras both in Australia and overseas.

As a director of Independent Music Productions he and his partner, Leah Hooper, have been responsible for many orchestral projects in the film and live event world of the entertainment industry. They include "Symphony of Life" with Tina Arena, as a live event and DVD (Studio Canal) and also a wide range of live movie and orchestra projects, including 'Psycho' and 'The Princess Bride'.

Rob has composed and produced music for a wide variety of projects, including "Luminous" for the Australian Ballet's 50th anniversary at the Lincoln Center in New York City, soundscape/ sound design for the Australian Ballets' production of "1914", the Victorian Tourism awards (2001 and 2003), “The MCG Story” film, “Shell – 100 years in Australia”, some 22 scores for documentaries (distributed by Southern Star TV in London) and a major live performance work for orchestra and film entitled “Concerto for Whale and Orchestra”.

Rob has orchestrated and conducted scores for film and television including “Falling for Figaro”, “Beneath Hill 60”, “Bran Nu Dae”, “Night”, “The Society Murders” and “The Book of Revelation”. He has also written string arrangements for various recording artists including "The Angels", “The Tea Party”, TaxiRide, Beccy Cole and Ricky Lee.

As musician he has played on film and TV music across a period of 46 years.


Awards have included an Advance Australia Award and Gold/ Platinum albums in recognition of his work on Elton John Live in Australia with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra .

In 2014 Rob composed and produced music for "Symphony of the Wild" a feature documentary extravaganza and in 2012 he composed and produced the original score for the feature film "Sneezing Baby Panda - The Movie"

Rob has been fortunate to work in an extremely diverse number of areas of the music industry for over 46 years as a performer, composer, arranger, teacher, conductor and contractor.

He has performed in Australia, Japan, England, New Zealand, Asia and Europe on projects ranging from live and recorded orchestral events to music theatre and rock tours.

Whether it be classical or commercial based projects, small or large, Rob feels equally at home. He is continually excited about the challenges and opportunities that the music world continues to present.
